An In - Depth Interview Study on ROK Army Private Soldiers’ Adaptation to the Military Life

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose : This research investigated and analyzed the adaptation process of the current new generation as military personnel, in order to understand the overall phenomenon of adaptation.
Methods : This study was a narrative investigative research that analyzed data collected from in-depth interview using the content analysis method. The subjects of investigation were 22 private first class in active military service at units in Gangwon-do region ; composition was based on commanding officer and colleagues’ recommendation for successful adaptation to military service, ranks from first class private to corporal. The interview form developed by the researcher was used in order to learn the significance of soldiers’ adaptation to military life.
Results : The solders’ adjustments to military life divided into mainly 3 categories : getting associated with an unfamiliar environment, becoming habituated, and discovering the development to soldiers. ’Getting associated with a unfamiliar environment’ had 3 specific features: the burden of military life, cognizance of freedom regulation, and not being able to find the meaning of the military duty. ’Becoming habituated’ had 6 features: overcoming the difference, trying hard, looking at the bright side of military life, friendship between co-soldiers, setting up an example to others, and trying hard to get acknowledged. Discovering developments had 4 features: growing into the military life, becoming a man, learning the civility amongst the relationships, and becoming more focused on their goal in the future.
Conclusion : The results of this study can help with understanding the private first class’ adaptation experience, and can be utilized to develop the intervention strategies for improving the quality of military life.
